Thursday’s ‘Lost’ debate: Who was in the coffin?

February
14

Sure, this week’s question goes back to last May’s flash-forward finale, but it’s one that every fan I know is still obsessing over:

Who was in the coffin at the funeral home that Jack visited?

thecoffin.jpg

Of course, we all know that Jack’s the only mourner who showed up. And in the episode’s final conversation between Jack and Kate, it seems like it’s someone they both know—since Kate angrily asks Jack why she’d go to that person’s funeral.

Thanks to obsessed fans with some tech skills, we know a few other facts as well that might help us discover the dead person’s identity.

Remember the obituary that Jack read on the plane? Go here to read the entire transcript, but here’s the basics from the newspaper article’s bits and pieces:

• The dead person is a man whose first name begins with “Jo.”

• He died in Los Angeles, but is from New York.

• He committed suicide by hanging himself from a beam in the apartment.

Oh yeah, and it’s definitely not a new character: It’s someone we’ve seen before. Producer Carlton Cuse mentioned that in this interview.

Plus, at the 2007 Comic-Con Convention, the producers confirmed this person’s New York connection and that he was survived by a teen-age son.

So I thought I’d give you the lowdown on the blogosphere’s favorite suspects.

Feel free to argue for (or against) one of the following in the comments section below—or choose another island dweller and make your case for him!

Here are the four folks most fans are thinking is in that mysterious coffin:

locke.jpgJOHN LOCKE: His first name matches with the obituary, and based on what we’ve seen in Season 4 so far, it seems likely that Kate would be pissed at the Island Mystic. Then again, he’s shown no interest in leaving the island. And as far as we know, he has no children.
sawyer1.jpgJAMES FORD: Sawyer could have changed his name—after all, he’s done it before. But where’s the LA-NY connection? And Sawyer has a daughter, not a son. And why would Kate hate him so much?
ben1.jpgBENJAMIN LINUS: Ben also has a fondness for aliases. (Remember Henry Gale?) And given last week’s episode, when we discovered the Freighter Folks are actually out to capture Ben, it seems plausible that he could be dragged back to civilization against his will. Jack going to his funeral could also be a way of showing how he was eventually convinced that Ben was right: Their so-called rescuers are bad news, and leaving the island was a mistake. But who’s the mystery kid?

michael.jpgMICHAEL DAWSON: A name change makes sense if Michael wanted to stay anonymous after killing Libby and Ana-Lucia. A guilty conscience prompting suicide makes sense, too. He’s from New York. Walt fits the teen-age son description. But how would Jack know his alias? And why wouldn’t Walt come to his funeral?

Have fun with this one, everyone! And check back here tomorrow for a recap of tonight’s episode—it’s supposedly Sayid-centric!

Michael makes the most sense from the description – New York, teenage son. I have a feeling it might be someone we haven’t met yet.

I was on board with the Michael theory, until last night’s episode. Now I’m thinking Ben could be a distinct possibility…

Ive been thinking its Walt only because of the teenage son issue and I remember in that episode it was in mostly african american area where the funeral home was. But then again I was thinking Ben also…
Guess time will tell…Im a lostaholic
