Advance look: Fox’s Unhitched — Rashida Jones is single and back on prime time

Karen Filippelli is gone, much to the glee of that breed of hardcore Office fans known as Jammers. But Rashida Jones is only a network away.

Jones makes her return to prime time—following Filippelli’s inauspicious departure from Scranton last fall—with the new Fox comedy Unhitched (premieres 9:30 p.m. ET, Sunday, March 2). I’ll be your weekly guide to the ins-and-outs and ups-and-downs of this late-season pickup, which probably got a boost from the writers strike simply by having produced episodes in the can and ready to air.

I’ve been sitting on screeners of the pilot and follow-up episode for a couple weeks now, but I’ll be watching them very soon and posting my semi-spoilery review in time for you to decide whether this show is worth your time. For now, though, I give you the basics (pretty much entirely courtesy of Fox Broadcasting).

Series synopsis (aka, What’s it all about?)

Dating in your 20s is like going to the farmers’ market – if you get there early, there’s plenty of fruit, all ripe, juicy and yours for the taking. But dating in your 30s is like getting there at closing time. The remaining fruit has been sitting in the sun all day. It’s been dropped, squeezed and handled by a thousand different people.

100duo_mg_4818.jpgSo reads the official network synopsis. That’s some visual metaphor, huh?

The first thing to note is that this is a Farrelly Brothers project. That’s the duo behind “Something About Maryâ€? and “Dumb & Dumber”. So there’s reason for high hopes, though I’ve heard it suggested on the interwebs that Bobby and Pete have lost their mojo a tad. I’ll reserve judgment on that.

Unhitched is the story of newly single friends living in Boston and coming to grips with starting over in their 30s. Each is on the hunt for their one true love.

Who are these people? (A cast breakdown)

Jack “Gator” Gately (Rye Brook native Craig Bierko): Charismatic and optimistic, he never expected to be single again. Now that he is, he’s making the best of it until he finds “the one.â€? I sense that he’s the alpha male of the group, or at least the guy we’re supposed to care about the most.

A Tony Award nominated Broadway actor, Bierko’s film credits include “Cinderella Manâ€?, “Scary Movie 4â€? and “The Long Kiss Goodnightâ€?, while his TV work includes “Boston Legalâ€?, “Nip/Tuckâ€? and “Sex and the City.â€?

Tommy (Johnny Sneed): Three-times divorced, Tommy runs his own microbrewery, and his three passions are beer, food and women. I don’t know his last name on the show, but I’d bet it’s Cliché .

Sneed’s got a cooler story than his character, though. He left a career as a lawyer in Gulfport, Miss., in 2001 to become an actor, landing roles in the Farrellys’ flop “The Heartbreak Kid,â€? and the considerably less floppy “Fever Pitch.â€? (Well, I liked it.) He’s also been on House, CSI: New York, Boston Legal, ER and My Name is Earl. And he plays drums and sax with the bands Sugar Fantastic and Poolhouse. Cool, right?

Dr. Freddy Sahgal (Shaun Majumder): Freddy is a doctor whose surgical skills far exceed his way with the ladies.

The Canadian-born Majumder co-starred in “Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle,â€? “The Ladies Man,â€? and “Pushing Tinâ€? and was most recently a regular on the Canadian comedy series “This Hour has 22 Minutes.â€? I’ve heard that is very funny, but that’s about all I can say about that without making stuff up.

Majmuder has also been seen on 24 and Cedric the Entertainer Presents. He got his start with Second City in Toronto.

And then there’s Kate (the aforementioned Jones): A smart, successful attorney, she handled all three of her friends’ divorces. Now she’s 30 and she’s just been dumped by her long-term guy (sounds Filippellishly familiar, no?) after a seven-year engagement (and that sounds Beesley-esque). So she’s in the same singles scene boat as the guys. Adds Fox, cryptically…

With Kate owning the brownstone next to Gator’s, this pair, over time, may find that “the one is just a brick wall away.

Intriguing, no? Right, no.

Besides her recent stint on The Office, the Harvard grad Jones stars in the independent “Brief Interviews with Hideous Menâ€? (written by and starring on- and off-screen beau John Krasinski), set for release later this year. You might have spotted her in Judd Apatow’s brilliant but under-appreciated series Freaks and Geeks as well as Boston Public and The Chappelle Show. She’s very un-Karen-ish in both.

Here’s what the actors have to say about their characters in this clip, courtesy of Fox.

And here’s the official summary of what the pilot episode has in store…

In the opener, Jack finds himself ill-prepared to re-enter the dating scene as a blind date goes bananas for him; his friend and neighbor Kate finds big things come in small packages when she dates a member of the Boston Celtics; and Indian-born Dr. Freddy learns that love isn’t cheap with the woman of your dreams. Celtic Paul Pierce and Ryan Gomes guest star as themselves.

Like I said, I’ll be back in a day or two to recap my thoughts on this show’s initial episodes and to weigh in on its chances of sticking around at least as long as Karen Filippelli stuck around Dunder Mifflin. I’ll be curious to know what you think and whether you plan to tune in.
