‘Idol’ Top 20: Who goes home tonight?

I think it’s these four, although only Amanda Overmyer (far left) and Jason Yeager (far right) obviously deserve such a fate, compared to Kady Malloy (middle left) and Luke Menard (middle right), who are probably more talented than we’ve seen to this point.
Let’s start with Overmyer. As I mentioned last night, it was enough of a crime that her trainwreck of a performance was the worst since voting started for Season 7. But to see her at the show’s end, literally distancing herself from the rest of the women on stage, it was just the final straw for me. I often understand why people attack the Machine that is “American Idol,” but if you’re going to compete on the show, you have to drink at least a little of the Kool-Aid. Or at least offer a half-hearted “Oh yeah!” once in a while.
But at least with Overmyer, she fills a rocker-chick niche. As for Yeager, I just don’t see his appeal among voters. He’s stuck in 1958, regardless of what genre he’s singing. And in a cruise-ship/wedding-band way, to boot.
As for Malloy, her atonal rendition of “Magic Man” was probably the week’s worst possible song choice. Of all the songs from the ‘70s, she had to do that one? Terrible decision. That said, I still ranked her choppy performance higher than Overmyer, Ramiele Malubay (whom I’d send home with Overmyer) and Asia’h Epperson. And I do think she has as much raw talent as, say, Alexandréa Lushington. But because she’ll be splitting votes as one of four female blondes remaining, and probably has been the most forgettable of the four based on performances alone, look for tonight to be her last hurrah.
Menard had a poorly powered falsetto throughout “Killer Queen.” Part of me wonders if he’s holding back, because I’d really like to hear him belt on a soaring ballad. But with other male contestants better defining themselves through performances (David Archuleta), distinct looks (Jason Castro) or flattering producer packages (Michael Johns), I’d be surprised if Menard made it to the Top 16. Maybe if I were in another frame of mind, I’d send home Robbie Carrico or Danny Noriega instead, but for the moment, I think Menard and Yeager are the odd men out this week.
But then I worry: Does the talented David Hernandez have any following? I fear he might be the first wrongfully cut contestant, perhaps as early as this week or next.
