Jericho: Oversight. Live thoughts

March
4

DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT READING PAST THIS SENTENCE IF YOU HAVEN’T WATCHED EPISODE 4, “OVERSIGHT.”

There’s no crying on Remote Access, consider yourself warned.

They freakin’ killed Bonnie!!

I didn’t see it coming until Bonnie didn’t follow Mimi into the pantry.

But how badass was Bonnie, killing every J&R goon except Goetz? She was incredible! I have to say, if I had to go out, I’d want to go out just like her.

I’d completely thought Mimi was the one who was going to die, based on the description of this and next week’s episodes and the photos I saw for next week. Wow. I was completely wrong. I have to admire any show that can prove me so utterly and completely wrong.

Other thoughts: Goetz, obviously, is the embezzler. I now believe “John Smith” truly is trying to help Hawkins and is on the right side. I’m glad Heather’s in on the truth, but I felt really badly for her when she had to lie to Beck. Beck is a good man, and a very smart man. He recognized Valente in about half a second. And his willingness to get Dale freed was fabu.

I’ll have plenty more to say tomorrow, but I had to express my live thoughts immediately. I also wanted to share this info that I didn’t have time to get to earlier in the day:

CBS released info today on Nielsen Live Plus 7-Day ratings. Those are the ratings that take into account everyone who watches a show within 7 days of its actual air date. People who DVR or otherwise record a show and watch it at any other point.

When those numbers are taken into account, Jericho’s Feb. 12 Season 2 premiere ratings went up a whopping 15 percent among adults 16-49, 17 percent for those aged 25-54 and by more than 1 million viewers, over the live+same day ratings (just like it sounds – those who watched the show live or within 24 hours of its airing).

On top of that:

According to CBS Interactive Research, the second season premiere episode of JERICHO was streamed 520,000 times across the CBS Audience Network during its first week (Feb. 12-18) and 700,000 times over a 14-day period (Feb. 12-25).

JERICHO’s other online engagement during its second season premiere week included 760,000 streams of episodes from its first season and 130,000 streams of various clips, upping JERICHO’s first week cumulative streams to 1.41 million.

Additional online engagement for JERICHO that week included five times the volume of JERICHO searches vs. the prior four weeks, seven times the daily traffic to JERICHO message boards (compared to mid-January traffic) and three times the average daily blog posts.

So what’s all that mean?

It’s unclear at this point, but it can’t be bad. And it shows CBS and all the networks, frankly, that they’re getting a lot of viewers who aren’t being counted through the more traditional means.

There is a revolution in television watching, and it’s only going to accelerate. This is in large part what the entire writer’s strike was about, even.

Will we get a Season 3? I honestly don’t know. But that possibility is looking brighter than it did just a couple weeks ago.

Come back tomorrow for a full recap!

Amy, thank you! Hard to hold your feelings in after that episode, isn’t it? I’ve had a feeling for several weeks it would be Bonnie, and I’ve dreaded it (but also anticipated the show) all day. I want to see vengeance! I’m ready to take Goetz downtown! And this is ONLY a TV show? Awesome TV, evoking emotions I don’t have about anything else on the tube.

I will comment tomorrow, I cannot read. Jericho was broken into in my area due to tornado warnings (not in my immediate vicinity, luckily) and I missed the last 10 minutes, DAMN IT! LOL! I will watch online tomorrow and comment then! It was an incredible episode and I was so pissed this happened!

  3. SaveJake

Beck Rocks! I was impressed too that he saw Valente so quickly and got the kid out of the office. He’s a smart man. Fits right in with Jake and Hawkins. I must say they have all been strong characters this year. Tonight was intense and I want more…....!

  4. Amy Vernon

By the way, who has the Morse code translation for me? :-)

Welcome – Thank you for stopping by! I know exactly what you mean… I’m ready to take on Goetz bare-fisted. Who’s with me?
Yvonne – I can’t believe it! But when I saw there were two comment, I knew one had to be from you! lol
SaveJake – Isn’t he, though? He does, as Carol Barbee once noted, “fill that vacuum of awesomeness” left by Johnston’s death. (not that he truly replaces Johnston, but he definitely has a certain awesomeness..)

OK, I’m going to bed now. We’ll talk more about tonight’s ep in the light of day tomorrow.

What an awesome episode!! So much happened, and it had so many surprises. I hope the new Nielsen ratings make a difference and they renew Jericho!

Morse code = A costly death. Eeesh. A most excellent episode, ending with me, on the couch, in a fetal position, tears in my eyes, hands over my mouth. Not many shows put me in that position!

    WOW.

  7. lovejohnston

    WOW!! AMAZING! FABULOUS!! MINDBLOWING, EARTHSHAKING,
EXCELLENT, AWESOME, BRILLIANT!!! Did I leave any words out to describe OVERSIGHT???
I feel that we have turned the corner. We have won!
KUDOS to the writers, directors, producers, actors and crew for a truly breathtaking episode. (Especially Shoshanna) :(
IF CBS cancels JERICHO now, they are just plain NUTS!!

WE MUST HAVE A THIRD SEASON!!
    PASS THE WORD!

  8. C.

This was, by any measure, an exceptional piece of television. Unfortunately, I had to sit through weather alerts, election scrolls, and two minutes of Katie Couric to get to the end. But it was worth it.

Shoshannah, we will miss you. Sprague, you rock. Jericho, you MUST have a third season. I will no longer accept any other outcome.

  9. mpbnice

I HATE Jericho’s being on at 10:00. After last night, crying my eyes out, I was far from being sleepy. I just knew it was going to be Bonnie. Also, I’m in Ohio so they kept breaking in with Katie Couric’s smiling face at the worst possible moments.

  10. Melissa

So I TOTALLY loved this episode but I also TOTALLY do not understand what is going on with that whole thing with John Smith. What was he talking about with those picture messages he sent, like the whole disaster plan thing!? I’m sooo confused, PLEASE EXPLAIN!!!

  11. Amy Vernon

Erika – A costly death, indeed.

    Steph, Lovejohnston – absolutely.

    C. (Clarke) – Ditto (but at least here in the east, we didn’t have the weather alerts!)..

mpbnice – I know what you mean. I was sitting on the sofa with my laptop for quite some time after the show was over…

Melissa – Basically, John Smith is someone who worked for J&R (he may still work for J&R, that’s not clear) and was part of the organization back in the day when the U.S. government contracted with J&R to develop a worst-case scenario disaster plan. The premise was basically what actually happened in September 2006 – 25 (26? I can never remember how many cities) are taken down by nukes. How should the federal government respond? The Allied States of America govt in Cheyenne were in on the deal back in 2006, having the J&R plan as their blueprint. If word were to get out that it was elements in the government that planned and executed the nuke attacks, that would destroy the Cheyenne govt’s entire credibility. It’s far more of a smoking gun than the nuke that Hawkins has, even.
