A Jericho debate

March
11

So, terocious threw down the gauntlet and I’m just the kind of girl who’s a gauntlet picker-upper, so to get us all in the mood for tonight’s episode of Jericho, “Termination for Cause,” (not that we need to be “gotten in the mood for Jericho, but whatever) I figured I’d throw this out for debate:

Who is John Smith?

jakebeck.jpg

Kystorms, in her guest recap last week, posited that Beck is John Smith.

Back in the cabin, Hawkins gets another call from John Smith, and John asks Hawkins if the bomb is safe. Hawkins says yes, and asks him why he is helping him. Here is a very important clue, at 40:21 in the show we hear John Smith answer this question, saying “I want the truth to come out, same as you.”

Listen very carefully to his voice and you will tell that it is in fact Beck who is on the phone. Beck is John Smith. Now, this is my opinion, not based on written fact, rather based on the way Beck speaks: the way he exhales on certain words that is very distinguishable.

Delana, in the comments (third one), supposes Beck is too young to be Smith. This report was written in 1993, which means the research for it would have been done in the late ‘80s. And then there’s this:
Also, the report was made by J&R and if John Smith helped write it he must have been a J&R employee at the time. Beck was in the army, not with J&R unless something else is coming forward later.

Erika (comment No. 2), is of the mind that we haven’t met Smith yet. Len Neighbors on the Athens Exchange believes so, too, saying the voice sounded remarkably like Xander Berkeley, the late George Mason from 24.

I tend to agree with Erika, that Ky had a very interesting theory but I, too, don’t think we’ve met Smith yet. I think Delana’s points are solid and I’d be (very) surprised if Beck were Smith. Still, stranger things have happened, and I’m glad Ky threw it out there so we could have a Tuesday debate!

So who do you think Smith is? Beck, someone else we’ve seen or someone we haven’t met yet? State your case below.

I have to admit I think it sounds like Beck also. Two of the phone calls I felt it was Beck…..but that was by voice recognition only. I’m thinking it will end up being someone we haven’t seen yet.
Then again…..Major Beck is full of surprises!

I believe that John Smith is the bald guy (I don’t remember his name). He is trying to get Hawkins to play into his game. He found out that another team member was alive through the convestation with Beck. (Does Sarah work for the company…No.) I also believe that Hawkins is to smart to fall for this. He will see through it.

Thanks for quoting me. I feel so important now. I think we haven’t met John Smith yet. The people that play the ARG game think he might be Tom Tooman, but I don’t play so I can’t say yes or no to that.

So that’s here my gauntlet got off to. I hoped at one point that it was valenti. I am not sure why but I no longer think it is.
