When Saturday Night Live returned from the writers strike and wanted to make a splash, producers turned to former SNL veteran Tina Fey.
And what a splash she made. Her “Bitch is the new black” endorsement of Hillary Clinton made headlines for weeks. But in a conference call with reporters, Fey admitted she doesn’t miss the political lightning rod that that platform carried with it.
“I actually don’t miss the news humor business. I think it’s a lot of responsibility and pressure, and I prefer being just with these characters and telling stories every week. I’m enjoying that right now.”
On whether she misses the way let her be overtly political compared with 30 Rock
Fey could only talk about 30 Rock, which is finally returning from the writers strike with a new episode April 10. But she did say that Liz Lemon’s endorsement of McCain (in a season one scene with Jason Sudeikis as love interest Floyd) was an example of the way the show likes to put things out there to get people talking.
“I think that our role is more to spark discussion and to try to clarify and point out what we’re observing than to really endorse or campaign for anybody,” she said.
Fey said there is a story line in the works involving Jack, Tracy and the Republican party, but she said there were no plans for Tracy to endorse a candidate.
On Tracy Morgan’s counter-endorsement of Barack Obama
Fey did concede that liberal guilt is a great source of humor.
“Because it is a ridiculous sort of behavior and one we’re familiar with living in New York, that you see a lot of living in Manhattan,” Fey said. “I think Liz is more prone to it than I am.”
Asked about the controversy that resulted from her recent “clapter†remarks in Reader’s Digest with regard to The Daily Show, Fey said she didn’t really single out Jon Stewart’s faux newscast for criticism and is actually a big fan. (I told you so, by the way.)
“I think they know that I think their show’s great and would absolutely never be disparaging of their show,†Fey said.
She said Stewart and Colbert had been pursued for guest spots on 30 Rock and said she would “darken the doorstep of every performer living in New York if we are on the air long enough.”
On her alleged diss of The Daily Show
Fey confirmed there will be some baby-related news on the way for Liz Lemon and that both of her season one boyfriends, Floyd and Dennis the beeper king, would be back this spring.
“Liz does have a little bit of a pregnancy scare, Liz who probably hooks up once every seven years…when it rains it pours there for a week or two for her,†she said.
