Starbuck hearts Leoben

To me, that was the biggest shocker of this afternoon’s (or morning’s, if you’re on the west coast) conference call with none other than Starbuck herself, Katee Sackhoff.
When asked about Kara “Starbuck” Thrace’s relationship with Lee “Apollo” Adama (played by Jamie Bamber) and if she thought they’d end up together, her answer was a resounding no. Then she dropped the bombshell:
If anyone is fitting for her … it’d probably be Leoben. Anders is to weak for her, emotionally. Lee is too much of a Boy Scout. … He makes her feel guilty just by being who he is. … If there’s anybody she could actually let her guard down and be herself, it’s Leoben.
Leoben, played by Callum Keith Rennie, is one of the humanoid Cylons. He’s the one who kept her captive on New Caprica in that really nice apartment/jail cell and convinced her she’d had a daughter just to worm his way into her heart.
In his own bizarre way, I think Leoben actually does love her. It certainly seemed that way on New Caprica. I don’t think he was trying to wear down her defenses in order to get some information or get an in on the humans or anything of the sort. I think he truly loves her, even if he might not even know why.
It goes back to when they found the Leoben in the fleet back in, what was it, Season 1?, when she was interrogating him. He knew her. He knew of her. Of course, that lends credence to the belief that Starbuck might be the final Cylon. (Which I don’t believe for a single frakkin’ minute!!!) (Sackhoff, by the way, said she didn’t know who the last Cylon was and doesn’t expect it will be revealed until the absolute last possible moment.)
Does Leoben know what her destiny is? Did he know, as “Everything has happened before and will happen again,” as we keep being told, she would find Earth?
Gawd, I really can’t wait for Season 4 to start. Just one week to go.
Don’t forget, two specials air tonight on Sci Fi: Battlestar Revealed, at 10 p.m., and Battlestar the Phenomenon at 10:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, here’s some goodness to pull you through:
• A bunch of interviews with the creators and cast on SciFi Wire.
• Video of the cast on the red carpet.
• An article from Zap2it.
• Edward James Olmos telling SciFi Wire that he’d be OK if everyone died at the end of the series. It’s not a spoiler, just his take on the matter:
I think that people would be shocked, and they’d be hurt, and they would be totally, totally frustrated. But I’ve got to tell you, that’s a truth that people have to realize. We may do it to ourselves [in real life]. It all depends on us now and what choices we make.
Stay tuned to Remote Access next week for more tidbits out of the interview and selected audio segments from the group interview Sackhoff conducted while staring wistfully at the mountains in Whistler, British Columbia, desperately wanting to go snowboarding.
