V: The sequel!

I just have this to say about that: Squee!
Yes, Kenneth Johnson, creator of the gloriously cheesy and fabulous V miniseries (there were two, though the second was really the cheesy one, quite possibly because Johnson didn’t stick around for V: The Final Battle)
has told SciFi Wire that he’d like to do a new movie based on a sequel novel he wrote called V: The Second Generation.
It’s a sequel to the first miniseries and basically pretends the second and the (short-lived) TV series didn’t take place (kind of like how Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles pretends T3 didn’t happen).
IMDB has a plot summary:
Twenty years after their arrival on Earth, the Visitors have deeply entrenched themselves on the planet, enslaving the human race turning them into followers. The Resistance is losing the war with their alien masters until they gain a powerful and mysterious new ally.
And this might not be simply a TV movie. This is what Johnson told SciFi (and check out this three-part interview Johnson did with Ain’t It Cool News, which has way too much good stuff to excerpt here):
A number of the major studios have approached me, very interested, about turning it into a movie. We’re exploring all of those possibilities. Certainly the fact that the second generation novel is currently in bookstores has had an impact on people who are interested in V as a movie, because it not only indicates there’s an audience for more V, … it’s [also] lovely to be able to place a hardcover novel on a desk of a studio executive. That has its own weight.
I’ve gotta say, I had a huge crush on Marc Singer for years after the original TV movie aired. The original miniseries was much more serious and well thought-out than The Final Battle and the special and lizard effects were far better. The little girl who proved to be the savior of the human race in the second miniseries barely spoke and her twin lizard brother looked like one of my kid’s hand puppets.
If the original V guy is on board for this and we’re looking at 20 years of subjugation (instead of just a couple years after the lizards take over Earth, some weird little girl manages to drive them off mostly….), this could be really excellent.
And, yes, this does make me a huge sci-fi geek. But if being a geek is wrong, then I don’t wanna be right.

OMG – me too – Squee!
I love V – YAY!!!
I had a Marc Singer crush too because of “V” as well! This can only be good news.
SciFi never dies!! insert fangirly sqeee here
I was a total V geek as a kid. I own all of the incarnations (however cheesy the progressivly got) on DVD. I read the novel a few weeks ago (had it on preorder for months) and it was great. I emailed Kenneth Johnson to tell him how much I enjoyed it and he wrote back- TWICE! He’s a very gracious person.
I so hope this movie makes it to TV or the theaters or somewhere. They’ve been talking about it for a few years now. Hopefully now that the novel is out, it will happen. I would love to see Kenneth back at the helm.

I’m going to have to get the book from the library. I’ve never been big on books inspired by television shows or movies, but given that Johnson wrote it and came up with V the first time around, that probably makes a big difference. I’ve been meaning to get the original miniseries on DVD for a while now, but i might wait for blu-ray now.
or ask for it for Chrismukkah.
Thanks all for showing me I’m not even close to being the only V geek still around. And RP, thanks for that info about Kenneth Johnson. Just makes me like his work even more.
YES!!! Another V-geek from the 80s! I would love to see more of this story told, with a more modern telling, of course. Now that I think about it, the only other TV show that has captivated me as much as V did was, um, ... JERICHO! maybei, thanks for the RFJ post that alerted me to this!
Did I mention that Faye Grant was quite the babe in those days?
That didn’t hurt, neither!
