Ranking the ‘Idol’ Top 7

Sorry for the superlate post, but I had to chase down a particularly intense non-”Idol” story today for tomorrow’s Journal News.
Starting in mere minutes is tonight’s “American Idol” episode, featuring the songs, quirkiness and beauty that is former Bedford resident Mariah Carey! They should make for some solid TV. (That said, was anyone else disappointed by her vocal range and prowess—or lack thereof—for her blah “Idol Gives Back” song?)
So how do the remaining seven “Idol” contestants stack up before tonight’s performances? Allow me to rank them without pity:
1. David Cook—OK, so he picked an indulgent song last week. Tell me you’d rather buy Archuleta’s record. Hmm. Thought not.
2. David Archuleta—Yes, this dude has got the best pipes among the guys remaining in the competition. (Best female voice? See No. 3.) But he’s too squeaky clean and message-y for me. Even a PG-rated performance would do him some good at this point.
3. Carly Smithson—After choosing a Queen song that Simon Cowell correctly said came across “angry,” Smithson needs to crank the WowMeter™ to 11 … or she could be a goner come tomorrow night.
4. Syesha Mercado—Despite not connecting with viewers (too pretty? too boring?), I don’t care how many Bottom 3’s she winds up in. She doesn’t deserve to be ranked any lower than the contestants I’ve ranked below her.
5. Jason Castro—His voice matched up well with the Israel Kamakawiwo’ole version of “Somewhere Over The Rainbow,” but it was not original in the slightest. Might he claim some of the heartthrob votes from fans of the recently eliminated Michael Johns?
6. Kristy Lee Cook—She had her best performance last week and continued to be easy on the eyes. But that ain’t enough. Just ask Michael Johns.
7. Brooke White—Somehow escaped the Bottom 3 last week. Must have an awfully strong fan base, albeit one that’s awfully tough to compartmentalize demographically.
