New Days on "Grey's"

Just when I thought of a great name for Meredith and Derek as a couple — along the lines of Bennifer and TomKat — they’re broken up. Here it is: Deredith. Great, right? Anyway, I’m glad the two of them have split. Mer’s whining was grating on my nerves and eardrums. And, not being a big fan of hers, I like watching her squirm when she sees Derek kiss Nurse Rose. So now she’s seeing a shrink. Not doing much good, though. (The doc is played by actress Amy Madigan, who, unfortunately and truth be told, hasn’t aged well at all. Remember her as Kevin Costner’s fresh-faced wife in “Field of Dreams”?)
The storyline with Izzie trying to find out what was wrong with Otis (Cheech Marin) other than his sprained ankle was pretty ridiculous. And that she had $120,000 worth of unnecessary tests (even a spinal tap, which, I hear, is one un-freakin’-pleasant procedure!) done on him would have, in today’s world of skyrocketing medical costs, gotten her fired. And that the Chief didn’t verbally kick her butt was not like him. Also out of character was Bailey consenting to the residents’ contest. The woman who used to be called “The Nazi” tolerating that? I miss the old, always-cranky Bailey. She was a hoot.
The only part of the ep that I was truly into was the Robinsons-meet-bears storyline: the guy’s guts hanging out; the hole in his brother Philip’s hand; wife Jennifer considering herself just a “trashy waitress” who got lucky when Philip proposed to her (and only 2 weeks after they met); the horribly injured bro dying; and then Phil suddenly being diagnosed with a brain tumor. Ya never know where life’s gonna take you….
And thank goodness that Sloan shaved off that sleezy mini-beard (or whatever it was called). It made him look like one of those guys who cruise singles bars in a polyester suit.
I know that this entry has largely been a negative rant, but come on…. The nutty personal relationships between the characters were always fun to watch, but the silly medical stuff started last fall, when Izzie tried to save that injured deer that was lying in the back of a truck. P.S.: McDreamy fans must be noticing that Patrick Dempsey is doing voiceovers on all those State Farm Insurance television ads.
