Beloved minor characters to appear in 'Lost' finale

May
13

If you want a completely spoiler-free “Lost” finale—which kicks off its first hour on Thursday—then read NO further.

But if you’re jonesing for a really juicy tidbit, get this:

We’re gonna see lots of our favorite secondary characters from the series in the finale’s final two hours on May 29.

I’m talking Walt.

I’m talking Christian.

Penny.

Charles Widmore.

Richard Alpert.

And Dr. Marvin Candle.

WHOO HOO!!!

Oceanic Six, schmix. I’ve got nothing but love for Jack, Kate, Hurley, Sun and the rest of the  series regulars (who, of course, include non-Sixers Sawyer, Locke, Jin, Ben, Desmond, etc.).

But has any other drama incorporated guest stars so completely, so absorbingly, that they could be mistaken for leads?

(And before all you haters jump on me, I know Walt was one of the stars back in the day, but considering we’ve seen only two quick glimpses of him in two years, I’m relegating him to the “recurring character” category…)

You can’t get more crucial to the show’s mythology than Charles Widmore, right?  He’s Ben’s opponent for control of the island in what appears to be a real-life game of Risk.

And Penny?

She’s Desmond’s freakin’ constant.

And she’s a character so well-written, so well-played by Sonya Walger, that we could easily forget that Penny’s only appeared in FOUR episodes of “Lost.”

But damn, they’ve been—inarguably—the BEST episodes of the series: “Flashes Before Your Eyes” and “The Constant.”

(Speaking of Penny, check back here Thursday for our weekly “Lost” debate and I’ll tell you what I think will happen with Penny in the finale.)

Anyway, I’m just as psyched to see these blasts from the past (and present, and future) as I am to find out how the O6 makes it to the mainland.

I’ll even be happy for another flash of Dr. Marvin Candle, who you may remember as the scientist narrating the Dharma orientation films. He’s gone by different names in each video though, including Mark Wickmund.

The reason I mention Candle is because I noticed something interesting in ABC’s cast list for Part II.

It says actor Francois Chau will be playing Marvin Candle (obviously), but I’m wondering why he wouldn’t be playing Edgar Halliwax.

If you’re unfamiliar with that alias, you may have missed an Easter Egg from a few episodes back: It was the name on the parka that Ben wore when he time-jumped into the Sahara desert.

It’s also the name the Dharma doc uses in the orientation video for the as-yet-unseen Orchid station. The producers brought that orientation film to last year’s Comic-Con convention—as sort of a sneak peek at Season 4—and it’s expected to pop up in the finale.

So, again, why would the actor be listed guest starring as Halliwax?

Perhaps we’ll be seeing even more of this mysterious scientist than we thought…
