With her new movie, The Promotion, opening Friday, Jenna Fischer was interviewed by Terry Gross on NPR’s Frrresh Aaaiiiirr yesterday. (Don’t you love how Terry speaks? I didn’t always, but she’s grown on me.)
Anyway, amidst several familiar stories, Fischer managed to share a few new insights. The best, I thought, had to do with Office director Ken Kwapis’s long-standing personal interest in the Pam Beesly storyline. Fischer’s recollection of his interaction with her during the filming of the final scene of the season 3 finale was touching and it gives real insight into how she handled that scene so well.
You can download the interview for free at iTunes or listen to it streaming at npr.org.
Usually when a mainstream network comments on this show, even a network owned by the same parent company, the commentary usually suggests to me that the writer hasn’t seen a lot of episodes.
But in the case of msnbc.com’s recent column “TV shows took risks, but only some worked”, the writer heaps praise on The Office that he backs with astute observation.
Fans were glad to have Jim and Pam finally together, and while challenges may come their way they’re unlikely to get “Ross-and-Racheled” on this smart show. Jim and Pam bring just the right amount of sanity to an otherwise insane workplace. Meanwhile, newly stubbly Ryan’s promotion, innovation, and ultimate downfall was one of the greatest sub-sub-subplots on TV this season, and it was wrapped together wonderfully with his arrest for fraud being posted on YouTube.
Remember when Jim and Pam went to Schrute Farms Bed & Breakfast (“Money”, S4E4)? At the time, some crafty Office crew member posted a listing for the getaway at tripadvisor.com. Well that listing now has a whopping 574 comments and a rating of four out of five. Just check out this recent review.QUESTION: What makes Schrute Farms the best Beet Farm agro-tourist spot in Honesdale, PA? The table making, manure run or quaint architecture? FALSE! FACT: Bears eat beets! Bears, beets, Battlestar Galactica
You can’t buy advertising like that.
Just scanning the nominations for the 2008 Television Critics Association Awards, and The Office and 30 Rock are both up for top comedy, which is fitting since they are the top comedies.
I’d give you my pick, but it keeps changing. If neither wins, I will burn Utica to the ground. Hockassin, too.
Other interesting noms include John Adams vs. The Wire; Flight of the Conchords up for outstanding new program; Tina Fey vs. Alec Baldwin for individual comedy; and the Heritage Award, which pits M*A*S*H vs. Roots vs. Saturday Night Live vs. Sesame Street vs. The Wire.
Good luck picking that category.
And just a reminder, Jenna Fischer is on Letterman Friday night. OfficeTally has photos from her taping here.
