Jenna Fischer’s worst day on The Office set came a good four years ago, which means things have only gotten better since.
Fischer tells Parade that day came in season one, during filming of the episode “The Alliance,” in which boss Michael Scott insists the crew celebrate a staff member’s birthday a month early to boost morale in the face of impending downsizing. Since it was a birthday party, they ordered Michael’s favorite ice cream cake, even though the birthday girl was lactose intolerant.

”…we all had to eat mint-chocolate-chip ice cream cake all morning, starting at about 7 a.m. and going until noon,” Fischer said. “And we all got so sick. That was the absolute worst.”
Wow, that is so not a bad day at work. If they’d gotten canceled that day, as the show could have been that tenuous first season, now that would have been a bad day.
Asked about whether ratings fears crept onto the set, she admits they sure did.
“Early on, we were always nervous. We would call the ratings line and find out what our ratings had been the night before. And there was one day, where I remember we were especially unsure how well we did the night before so I called the line. And Phyllis held my hand while I listened to the numbers. And I hung up the phone and said, ‘We did great.’ And she and I both started crying because we knew we’d be around for another week.”
And in this interview with Fancast, Fischer talks about the best advice John C. Reilly has given her.
After working for a long time on a project, disappear for a long time into life. I think that’s really important. Try to avoid going back to back to back to back on projects. That recharging period is crucial to your artistic life. Also, to not get wrapped up in the superficial aspects of the business because then you won’t have anything to inform your work, if you’re too spoiled or someone drives you everywhere. Knowing what it feels like to be stuck in traffic and be subjected to standing in a line and waiting for a table – these are all emotions that are necessary to have in life in order to express them in your acting. Basically, don’t live a spoiled life just because you could.

Angela Kinsey’s latest blog is up at her MySpace. It’s her first post-baby blog, and she doesn’t say much except to thank fans for their support. But she does promise a full baby report soon, and she mentions plans to attend last night’s TV Land Awards, at which The Office scored a win with the Future Classic Award. Apparently Kinsey let Creed hold her baby. Yikes.
Ed Helms has scored the lead in indie comedy Manure, according to Variety. Billy Bob Thornton, Tea Leoni and Kyle MacLachlan also star. The flick, about a womanizing manure salesman, is shooting right now. Helms also scored a part in Night at the Museum II, which someone apparently thought was a good idea.
Look for Helms in July in Eddie Murphy’s Meet Dave. and with Jeremy Piven next February in The Goods: The Don Ready Story.
