YES Network broadcaster and former Yankee outfielder Bobby Murcer seemed like one of the nicest people ever to broadcast games, one of the nicest people to play baseball, one of the nicest people—period. I took the news of his death much harder than I anticipated.

I found solace, however, in the YES Network’s thoughtful, reverent and touching tribute to their colleague, “A Celebration of the Life of Bobby Murcer,” which premiered tonight, just one day after his death.
The one-hour special featured segments about Murcer that aired in previous YES Network programs like the Emmy-award winning “Yankeeography,” as well as interviews with many of his colleagues and friends, who seemingly were one and the same.
Even for a show that was obviously turned around with very little notice, hosts Bob Lorenz and Michael Kay did an outstanding job paying homage to their friend, who apparently made everyone he met feel that way.
Last night, I found catharsis in this YouTube video of a mic’ed up Murcer at an Old-Timers’ Day game at Yankee Stadium a few years ago. Featuring a funny, self-deprecating and charming man from Oklahoma, the video made me laugh while tears streamed down my cheeks.
It reminded me of all the reasons why Murcer will be missed.
