And now, we interrupt this blog to bring you an important 24 news update

July

Kiefer “Jack Bauer” Sutherland and 24 showrunners Howard Gordon and Jon Cassar were trotted out before the press this week to talk about the upcoming season and the November prequel movie, and, it appears, had quite a bit to say.

Don’t know where to turn? I’ve got your back. I read a zillion articles and I have your handy-dandy guide to the news about 24, right here. All sources are listed at the end of this post to make things easier (on me). I don’t consider anything too spoilery (and I’m a 24 spoiler stickler after being burned — badly — last season), but be forewarned that there are a few basic plot details:

The prequel movie

• The title: 24: Exile.
• It’s not in “real” time. Or maybe it is. Two different articles had two different takes on it. Not in real time: Here. In real time: Here.
• It takes place on inauguration day, when President Allison Taylor (Cherry Jones) is being sworn in.
• The outgoing president? Noah Daniels (Powers Boothe).
• A coup breaks out in Sengela, the country to which Jack had fled. He’s working with an old buddy, played by Robert Carlyle, who runs a school “that rescues these children involved in these wars and creates a safe haven.” (Quote from Kiefer via Movieweb)
• Bad-guy Jon Voight (character’s name is Jonas Hodges) appears in both the prequel and in Season 7. He’s “involved in a Blackwater-type organization.” (Quote from Cassar via E!Online)
• Jack is subpoenaed to appear before a U.S. Senate committee to defend himself against accusations of crimes against humanity.
• The prequel telemovie in no way supplants the idea for a full-length feature 24 film.

A 24 feature film

• The prequel doesn’t mean this won’t happen.
• There “probably” will be a movie, but not until the series is over.
• Who knows when the series will be over. Kiefer said that’s up to the audience.

Season 7

• Tony’s resurrection will make sense. Jon Cassar promises. And no, Tony’s not bionic.
• CTU is disbanded, but not completely dead. Whatever that means. (Though — giggle — Hollywood Today called it “the TCU”)
• If you add up all the years and in-between times, it’s 2017 on the show.
• President Taylor is very idealistic, but perhaps as strong a president as David Palmer was (heresy!).
• FBI agent Renee Walker (played by Annie Wersching) is a key character; the season is almost told from her point of view because you can’t have Jack questioning his past actions.
• No real love interest. (Bring back Kate Warner!)

Etc.

• Kiefer called his DUI arrest and incarceration “a dumb mistake.”
• He believes the powers that be did the right thing in postponing Season 7 due to the writer’s strike. Better to do it right than rushed.
• Given that Kiefer says the audience’ll decide when the show’s over, the idea that this season might be Jack’s last seems to have no merit. Phew.
• No word about Julia Roberts.

  1. Nick

Sooooo… they pretty much took everything they’d filmed for season 7 and edited it so that it could become a two hour television movie? Well it’s still better than no 24 at all I guess. Viva cyborg Tony!
