There’s so much drama surrounding ‘90210’ these days, I feel like it’s 1990 all over again.
First off, there’s the return of Jennie Garth and Shannen Doherty, who’ll reprise their roles of Kelly and Brenda in the CW’s remake of the classic teen drama (premiering Tuesday, 8 p.m.).
The one-time frenemies make thirty-something look GOOOD—and give their teeny-bopper co-stars a run for the hotness title—with a super-sexy photo shoot for the cover of this week’s Entertainment Weekly.
Unfortunately for those of us looking forward to a hair-pulling bitchfest, the two seem to be actually getting along.
BOOOR-ING!!
And Shannen claims that Tori Spelling’s recollection of a fistfight between the two is totally false. Although this exchange makes it seem as if she’s splitting hairs:
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Okay, but back to the fistfight: fact or fiction?
GARTH: I don’t think we ever hit each other.
DOHERTY: We had our moments.
GARTH: I just remember being outside and the boys having to try to settle us down.
DOHERTY: No, we never punched each other.
GARTH: Scratching? I’m not going to deny that.
Anyway, Shannen’s also on the cover of US Weekly this week, in which she repeats her attempt to make us all believe she’s really, truly changed her deliciously snotty ways.
(Is it wrong to wish that she hasn’t?)
Even Luke Perry’s been drawn into the hoopla, after Zap2It.com reported that his ex-alter ego, the surftastic, sideburned Dylan McKay, would be revealed as the father of Kelly’s four-year-old son on the new series.
The studio and Perry’s reps insist he is NOT appearing on the show, but that doesn’t mean a girl can’t dream, does it?
And judging from the way the media and fans eagerly jumped on the idea, he might do well to consider it.
So what does all this mean for the actual, you know, SHOW?
Not much, except create a whole lotta buzz.
Which the series definitely needs, because as has been already mentioned here, the CW refused to send out advance copies of the premiere—which often means a network has a stinker on its hands.
But E! claims that the real reason the episode wasn’t released is that it wasn’t finished yet.
At the show’s launch party on Saturday, cast members—including (see below) AnnaLynne McCord, a.k.a. Naomi, a.k.a. “the new Kelly”— revealed that, with just days to go until the premiere, they were still reshooting scenes.
Uh, call me crazy, but that news isn’t exactly reassuring.
Looks like we’ll just have to wait and see whether the newbies are more interesting than the old-timers.
And they’ll have to bring their A-game, because so far, the old-timers are scoring all the points.
