If the presidential election outcome is anything like the TV ratings for the candidates’ convention speeches…

… we’d better start preparing for another hanging chad fiasco and days of waiting.

Depending on your source, either John McCain’s speech eked out Barack Obama’s for the TV ratings crown (Reuters) or both were deadlocked with 42.4 million viewers (Associated Press).

One ratings outcome does look clearer: both of those news outlets reported that more people watched the Republican National Convention in its main three days (an average of 34.4 million per night) than the Democratic National Convention over its four (an average of 30.2 million per night). The surprising pick of Sarah Palin as McCain’s running mate within hours of the DNC’s conclusion likely helped boost those numbers, with both supportive Republicans and curious Democrats tuning in to learn more.
