I take it Michael Scott would be wearing waterskis and a leather jacket?
The Office isn’t what it once was. No show is after 70-something episodes. And to be fair, it’s still better than most of what’s on TV. That said, honest fans can see a finish line in the distance, even if the Scranton branch still has a few seasons left in its bag of tricks.
But I came across an idea for a way to make it end immediately, or at least make the most diehard fans wish it would: Have Ricky Gervais appear as his character from Extras. Wouldn’t that be a hoot? So he tells TVGuide.com…
“I’d quite like them to maybe be watching an episode of Extras, and Michael Scott comes along and goes, ‘This guy is no good. If they ever do a remake, I think I should do that part.”
Maybe it was just an offhand quip, but I can see the sharks circling on Lake Wallenpaupack as I write this, because that would be the show’s ultimate shark-jumping moment.
This is a show whose stars bandied about the idea of Carol Burnett playing Michael Scott’s mom before producers pooh-poohed the idea as too much of an acknowledgment of real life outside the mock-umentary premise. They even fretted about Michael recognizing Amy Ryan’s Holly Flax as her other character from The Wire, which he’d referenced just a few episodes earlier.
I love Ricky Gervais, and I still love The Office. At first blush, the idea of a cross-over excited me in a funny-times-funny-equals-funny-squared kind of way. And partner Stephen Merchant’s directing turn last week really revived some of the essential Office-ness the show has gradually eschewed. But how do you recover from that? His very appearance would completely shatter the fourth wall of a show whose sets actually have four walls.
It would be the equivalent of Marty McFly from 1985 running into his future self, creating a Doc Brown paradox of epic television proportions.
Just enjoy The Office for the brilliant Gervais adaptation it is. And if you want to see Gervais himself, watch his stand-up routine on HBO Saturday at 9 p.m.
