Actor Isaiah Washington, who played Dr. Preston Burke on the popular medical show, would return to the ABC series if asked. That’s according to an article in the latest “TV Guide,” with Kiefer Sutherland on the cover.
The impetus for the “TVG” Q&A was the firing of actress Brooke Smith, who played gay doc Erica Hahn. Interestingly enough, Smith was brought in after Washington was kicked off the show for allegedly tossing gay slurs toward castmate T.R. Knight, who’s gay in “real life.” Washington then supposedly when into rehab to change his attidude.
“The rehab things was incorrect,” Washington told writer William Keck. “There’s no such thing as rehabilitation. I was given an opportunity to go to executive counseling so I would get away from the media. The world still thinks I taunted T.R. Knight and called him the F-word, which I didn’t. [The assumption was] that all of the problems would end if the bad guy, Isaiah Washington, was removed.
How would he “fix” an ailing “Grey’s”? “Bring Burke back,” said Washington. He’d actually return? “Absolutely.” Washington also admitted that his career hadn’t been exactly going gangbusters since he had been axed from Seattle Grace. The whole incident (which, according to Washington, didn’t even happen) was blown so out of proportion.
Who would I rather see on the show—Hahn or Burke? Definitely Burke, because Washington’s character was far more interesting and integral to the main storylines! What about YOU? Which of the two characters would YOU rather have return?
