Bloody good

November

It seems that media interest in HBO’s “True Blood” — which just concluded its first season run to the satisfaction of the blogosphere — has spiked with the arrival of the movie phenom “Twilight.” Not that the two are bound to share much crossover action. “Twilight” is for the tween/soccer mom set. There’s nothing tween about “True Blood.”I’m still winding my way through the last few episodes, courtesy of HBO.  But having read Charlaine Harris’ entertaining “Dead Until Dark, ” on which the first season was based, I already know who the murderer is, and I trust that creator Alan Ball will do right by Ms. Harris and us and give the no-account trash who make up much of the citizenry of Bon Temps their just desserts.

Frankly, the flaws of the series remain. These are among the most stereotyped Southerners to be found on the tube, and the sex and violence are as thick as those honeyed accents.  On the other hand, the  core relationship between  idiosyncratic  waitress Sookie (Anna  Paquin) and vampire Bill (Stephen Moyer) is still touching and involving, even more so now that they’ve done the deed and discovered — a la Buffy and Angel — that sex doesn’t necessarily bring you closer together.

I’ve noticed that a number of blogs have invited readers to consider who’s the sexier undead — Bill or Edward (Robert Pattinson) in “Twilight.” It’s an apples-and-oranges thing. Bill is a grown man who had already experienced the joys and sorrows of marriage and fatherhood before he was turned. Whereas Edward was on the brink of manhood when he became a vampire. One is about fulfillment; the other, reconnection.

What they both share is a refreshing belief that grand passion must be tempered with some restraint.

Clearly, the discussion will continue as neither the “Twilight” series or “True Blood” is going away. But in January, PBS will present a miniseries based on a book that out-Gothics anything Harris or “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer can muster.

It’s Emily Brontë’s “Wuthering Heights.” No, it’s not about vamps. But let’s just say that Cathy and Heathcliff could easily eat Bill and Edward for breakfast.
