Golden Globes honor ‘30 Rock,’ ‘Mad Men’

Sure, the big news out of last night’s Golden Globes was all about the surprise score by “Slumdog Millionaire,” Heath’s posthumous honor and Kate’s double win.
And while all that was definitely cool, let’s not forget that some of Hollywood’s little people snagged some trophies, too.
“30 Rock” triumphed with a trifecta: Best Comedy Series, Best Actress in a Comedy (for Tina Fey) and Best Actor in a Comedy (for Alec Baldwin). Plus, Tracy Morgan delivered what might be one of the best acceptance speeches ever: ” I’m the face of post-racial America. Deal with it, Cate Blanchett!”
As for dramas, “Mad Men” came out on top, as did Anna Paquin of “True Blood” and Gabriel Byrne of “In Treatment.” And when it comes to miniseries, let’s just say that pretty much anyone associated with “John Adams” or “Recount” walked away a winner.
Go here to check out the rest of the winners, and read on for my take on the Top 5 greatest – and weirdest – comments by TV stars on and off the red carpet…
1. Ricky Gervais can do no wrong. The “Extras” star and “Office” creator already livened up a dreary Emmy telecast last fall, and he brightened up the Globes, too, by walking onstage with a beer (a nod to what really makes a fun awards ceremony: alcohol). He then gave props to his TV brethren by shushing the noisy crowd: “How rude are you? Just because you’re film stars!” And anyone who watched Kate Winslet’s hysterical cameo in “Extras” must have loved Gervais’s crack after she won for playing a former Nazi prison guard in “The Reader:” “Told ya, do a Holocaust movie!”
2. Rainn Wilson is hilarious in person. Let’s face it, most of those red carpet interviews are pretty boring. It’s all about asking who designed a star’s gown or who they want to see win (which most of those lame-os are too scared to answer for fear of offending some nominee who they might work with in the future). Then there’s Rainn Wilson of “The Office.” He laughed with Ryan Seacrest about the fact that the Globes allow TV folk like them to “slum” with movie stars, noting that last year, he got to “pee at a urinal next to Martin Scorsese!”
3. Anyone fooled by Jeremy Piven’s humble pie act? The “Entourage” star has gotten some major bad press lately for leaving Broadway’s “Speed-the-Plow” due to mercury poisoning (from supposedly eating a LOT of sushi). A big fat lie? Well, that’s what lot of theater folks think, and they haven’t been shy about saying so. So Piven was all hangdog on the red carpet – praising the play’s co-stars (who, according to the rumor mill, hated his guts) and repeating over and over how “humbled” he was to be at the Globes. Funnily enough, the person to bring up the whole business with NBC’s Tiki Barber was none other than his “Entourage” boss, Mark Wahlberg, who joked, “I’m just wondering if this mercury poisoning isn’t contagious.” Piven did not seem amused.
4. What’s up with David Duchovny’s marriage? I would have loved a reporter to ask Duchovny about his sex addiction, but alas, we can’t have it all. But Duchovny – who is reportedly separated from wife Tea Leoni – provided his own WTH moments with shout-outs to Leoni from the red carpet AND the stage. Interesting “please take my cheatin’ ass back” approach, no?
5. Tracy Morgan has his priorities straight. I mentioned Morgan’s awesome acceptance speech earlier, but did you notice who came last in his thank-yous? NBC president Jeff (“J.Z.”) Zucker. He’s just the guy who decides whether “30 Rock” stays on the air, but Morgan ranked him below the craft services lady who makes those terrific tacos. Genius.

I love your 5 highlights above, especially Ricky Gervais. He should be given hosting duty at all awards shows from now on. I also wrote about my top moments of the Golden Globes at http://connectwithyourteens.blogspot.com/2009/01/top-12-highlights-of-golden-globes.html Can’t wait for the next awards show.
