Almost two years to the day after “The Sopranos” series finale, Edie Falco returns to TV tonight in Showtime’s “Nurse Jackie.”
It’s the amazing actress’s first starring role on the small screen since the Mob drama cut to black, and she hasn’t lost her ability to fire F-bombs with gusto.
But aside from that – and the fact that this new show is gritty, dark and gutsy- there’s no trace of Carmela Soprano here.
Gone is Carmela’s high hair and fake nails. Left behind are her ill-fitting stretch pants. And forget about that problematic marriage to a sociopath with a tendency to have family and friends gunned down.
Yes, “Nurse Jackie” is a comedy, but only Edie Falco would choose a comedy with so many dysfunctional twists.
Jackie is a brilliant, but flawed, ER nurse in an NYC hospital – someone who bends the rules to help her patients. She also helps herself to Vicodin and Adderall in order to get through life’s rough spots.
Will Nurse Jackie be Edie’s next Emmy-winning role? Decide for yourself after the show’s premiere at 10:30 p.m.
