Weeds returns tonight and everything is ‘Wonderful Wonderful’

Weeds returns tonight for a fifth season with “Wonderful Wonderful,” and it returns fairly strong, as I detailed last week.
When people ask me about this show and whether it’s worth watching, I tell them it’s a far cry from the show it set out to be, which is a bummer, but it’s still very much worth watching.
It’s still a very funny show with a bunch of oddball characters who manage to get themselves into bizarre and uncomfortable situations. Whether there’s any ulterior message about marijuana legalization — well, let’s face it, they’re all for it — doesn’t really matter. It’s all so muddled anyway, and the show comes off as a cautionary tale, not only centered around illicit drugs but bad decision making generally.
For some great insights into the show from star Mary Louise Parker, check out her recent interview with TVGuide.com. I especially liked this exchange…
TVGuide.com: Do you often find yourself being asked to defend or explain Nancy to people?
Parker: I think more often than not people pretty much like her. But I guess sometimes people will be like, “How does it feel to play a mother who’s so irresponsible? Is it hard?”TVGuide.com: Do you try not to judge her?
Parker: I don’t mind judging her. I’m going to have to look at her honestly, like I’d want to look at myself honestly. I think, you know, she’s fairly narcissistic — not to an extreme degree, but she doesn’t put her children first, and to me the definition of a good parent is someone who puts their kids first. I mean, they don’t always make the perfect decisions, but they have their children in mind before themselves.
Anyway, Andy (Justin Kirk) has a series of videos up at his own Website, UniversityofAndy.com. I didn’t find them terribly hilarious. His is a character I prefer in smaller doses, preferably with horrible things happening to him, like when he finally got with the Yeshiva administrator. But take it for what it is, a promo clip.
Seems like they should have enlisted Dwight Schrute for this one.
