‘So You Think You Can Dance’ Top 18 perform!

I can’t believe I’m actually quoting Lil C, but this season of “SYTYCD” is definitely going to be a roller-coaster ride.
At this point, anyone could go home, although some front-runners are slowly breaking away from the pack, like Kayla and Ade.
But who’d ever have predicted that picking a Shane Sparks routine out of the hat would be the dancers’ kiss of death?
Usually, hip-hop numbers, especially those choreographed by someone like Sparks, give couples a free pass to the next round. Ballroom and disco are the genres that typically give contestants the most trouble.
But BOTH of last night’s hip-hop dances – performed by Jason and Caitlin, and Ashley and Kupono – are probably going to land those couples in the Bottom Three.
How the tables have turned! Those are the very same couples who turned in last week’s best performances. So what was the problem? Was Shane just not at the top of his game? Or were these four dancers simply unable to rock his routines?
Click through to check out the couple-by-couple breakdown, and tell me if you agree with my picks for who’ll be dancing for their lives tonight…
RANDI & EVAN
(Jive, Louis Van Amstel)
Judges’ reaction: All over the place. Lil C thought they opened the show with a “bang” and that the dancers were well-matched. Mary disagreed slightly, saying the routine “fell short a little bit” and that Evan was the stronger of the two. Nigel expected Evan to perform better, adding that Randi did a better job.
My reaction: Meh. Once again, I tend to forget anything about these two once they’re off the stage. Not bad, but not particularly great either.
My prediction: Bottom Three. I don’t think they’ll be able to sail under the radar again.
(Jazz, Sonya Tayeh)
Judges’ reaction: They were “buck” for Lil C, who went out on a limb to predict Ade would be “everybody’s competition.” Mary said it was tough to find anything that she didn’t love. Nigel praised Melissa’s strength, saying he never would have guessed she’s a ballerina.
My reaction: HUH?!? Were we watching the same routine? True, I loathe Melissa, but honestly, she was awful. Her slashed pink stretchpants distracting – not her fault, I know, but still – and her moves were nowhere gritty enough for this down-and-dirty number. Last week, Ashley and Kupono gave a choppy routine fluidity, and it worked wonders; this week, Melissa flowed too much for this raw routine. I don’t know what Nigel’s talking about: For me, she needed to emphasize the “dirty” in her “dirty ballerina” persona last night.
My prediction: Probably safe.
JASON & CAITLIN
(Hip-hop, Shane Sparks)
Judges’ reaction: Not good. Lil C called it a “corny” nightmare, while Mary said it was like watching Michael Jackson and Britney Spears onstage. (You’d think that would be a compliment, but it wasn’t.) Nigel whined that Shane obviously tailored the choreography to make them look good.
My reaction: I agree with the judges overall, except for Nigel’s comment about Shane tweaking the steps. Don’t all the choreographers play to the dancers’ strengths?
My prediction: Bottom Three. (But if the crowd’s screams for Jason is any indication, he won’t be going home.)
JANETTE & BRANDON
(Disco, Doriana Sanchez)
Judges’ reaction: Let’s get right to the Lil C-ism of the night: “I believe the primary focus of all obstacles is to induce labor, so progress can be born…Right now, we just saw the birth of progression in two amazing dancers.” Translation: He liked it a lot. Mary’s reaction can be summed up in her first scream of the night. And Nigel called it one of the best disco routines the show’s ever had.
My reaction: Nigel’s right on the money. Last season, I remember wondering why on earth the show continues to include disco, when NONE of the dancers EVER do it well. Janette and Brandon proved me wrong. They were so blazing hot, I didn’t even notice that Janette tripped.
My prediction: Totally safe.
(Waltz, Louis Van Amstel)
Judges’ reaction: This routine, created to highlight Vitolio’s hardships as a Haitian orphan, moved Mary to tears. She said she didn’t feel Vitolio’s pain, but it was “painfully beautiful.” Lil C thought Vitolio’s emotion compensated for his choppy steps. And Nigel said anyone who wasn’t touched by the routine was “heartless.”
My reaction: Um, maybe I’m heartless? They were absolutely lovely, and as Nigel pointed out, they pulled a complete 180 from last week’s Tyce D’Orio disaster. But anyone else want to cry foul? There’s no way you could critique anything about that number after seeing poor Vitolio crying onscreen.
My prediction: Totally safe.
MAX & KAYLA
(Jazz, Brian Friedman)
Judges’ reaction: Mary said Kayla hasn’t made one wrong step since they saw her, and Lil C had no words to describe her talent. (That’s saying a lot for him!) Nigel called her a “front-runner” and complimented Max for being a wonderful partner.
My reaction: Now that’s what I’m talking about! For all the judges’ gushing, I don’t recall Brian Friedman at all from the early seasons, but it was great to have him back on board if that’s the kind of routine he delivers. He gave Max and Kayla a slinky, sultan-like number to perform, and they knocked it out of the park. Neither one broke character for a second, and Kayla’s only flaw is that she makes dancing look too easy.
My prediction: Totally safe.
JONATHAN & KARLA
(Contemporary, Stacey Tookey)
Judges’ reaction: After introducing newbie Stacey, who’s a choreographer on the show’s Canadian version, Mary said she was “spellbound” by these two. She also praised Jonathan for performing another genre “better than his own,” something she hadn’t seen in the show’s five seasons. Nigel said Jonathan had “no false moves.” Lil C’s analysis? Buck.
My reaction: Once again…HUH?!? I didn’t hate this number, but I certainly wasn’t as enthralled as the judges. Personally, I thought they had absolutely no connection up there: Karla looked almost robotic.
My prediction: Thanks to the judges’ rave reviews, they’re probably safe.
(Tango, Tony Meredith)
Judges’ reaction: There was a bit of commotion over Lil C’s critique of Phillip’s bent legs, until Tony Meredith confirmed that they were indeed supposed to be bent. Mary praised Phillip’s attitude and called Karla a “hot mama.” Nigel admitted that they weren’t good technically, but they were great entertainment.
My reaction: You have to be kidding. They were awful. Phillip’s expressions were almost comical; even Nigel noted that he shouldn’t look as if Jeanine weighed 300 pounds while lifting her. The judges clearly don’t want Phillip to go home because he’s the last street dancer in the contest; Nigel practically begged his fan base to call in.
My prediction: Probably safe, if only because of Phillip’s popularity.
ASHLEY & KUPONO
(Hip-Hop, Shane Sparks)
Judges’ reaction: Mary didn’t hate it, didn’t love it. Lil C pointed out that Kupono struggled throughout the number, but Ashley had some nice moments. Nigel was “underwhelmed.”
My reaction: A bit of a snore. Nigel nailed it when he said that he expected the dancers to come alive once they ripped their jackets off. Instead, they made me want to scold them for not hanging them up properly.
My prediction: Bottom Three.
So who do you think will be prepping solos?
And if it comes down to Jason, Caitlin, Randi, Evan, Ashley and Kupono, who should be sent packing?
Tune in here tomorrow to vent about the results!
