Bye-bye, Randi and Kupono.
Hello, Top 8.

After their disastrous paso doble – and uninspired solos – it was no surprise that this couple headed home. And it was time for them to go.
Maybe Evan had been Randi’s anchor, because once she switched partners, it was like she got lost on that stage. I guess the pressure is really on now, and nerves are frayed, but Randi was just a ridiculous mess of giggles and missteps this week.
And Kupono? I’m all for quirky, people, but then there’s just plain weird. And Kupono seemed to be getting weirder by the week. His get-ups this week were completely off the wall: Was he dressed as some sort of Native American bird last night? If he’d stayed, he probably would have turned up next week in a loincloth and a necklace made from a trash can lid.
Melissa and Ade were in danger, too, but managed to squeak by. Not a complete shocker, since they’d both been in the bottom before. For the girls, I figured it would either be Melissa or Kayla – and was pleased to see Kayla sail to safety. Maybe she’s growing on you, America? Fingers crossed.
Other thoughts on the night…
• Readers of this blog know I’m not a Melissa fan, but I’ll admit that Wade Robson’s Asian-influenced group number highlighted her skills to the max. It was a glorious routine overall, but Melissa glowed as an ethereal leader (or head geisha?) of the pack.
• What was up with having the bottom dancers do the same solos as the night before? Clearly, they weren’t good enough to convince people to vote, so why would we want to see them again? I think the four in trouble agreed; those dances were totally phoned in.
• The Black Eyed Peas’ performance was high energy, but I was a bit alarmed by the fact that Fergie looked like a cracked-out, Gothic drum majorette. What was that thing she was holding? A feathered conductor’s baton? A magic wand? Something a bit more X-rated?
• Cat’s news about next week’s episodes was both cringe-worthy and exciting. First, the bad news: Ellen DeGeneres will be a guest judge on Wednesday. Are they kidding? If you’re going to stunt cast, at least have the star be REMOTELY related to the dance world. And no, Ellen’s lame booty-shaking on her talk show and American Express commercials does not count. I like to shake it occasionally in my kitchen while washing the dishes: Can I come judge “SYTYCD,” too?

But Thursday’s 100th episode sounds muy caliente. First, there’s the much-anticipated Katie Holmes song-and-dance number. (And by much-anticipated, I mean that people will tune in simply to see how much of a fool she makes out of herself.)
Then, EVEN BETTER, some past finalists will be returning to perform a few of the show’s favorite routines, including Wade Robson’s “Ramalama (Bang Bang),” “The Hummingbird and the Flower” (danced by Jaimie and Hok) and “The Bench” (danced by Travis and Heidi). OMG, two weeks of Travis Wall sightings? Swoon.
Keep dancing until next week, fans! And here’s a question: Who in the competition is emerging as YOUR favorite dancer?
