‘Dirty Sexy Money:’ Strike casualty?

February
6

Looks like ABC may be clean and sexy-free until the fall.

TV Guide’s Michael Ausiello is reporting that even though ABC has three more pre-strike episodes of “Dirty Sexy Money” in the can, they likely won’t air until September.

dsm.jpg

I’d been wondering when we’d see more of those fabulous Darlings, since I knew there were still a few installments lying around. Especially since it didn’t look like ABC had any plans of airing them during February sweeps, which would have made the most sense—considering the drought of new scripts in TV Land these days.

But all is not lost! Ausiello says that the network will most likely kick off a new fall season of “DSM” with those extra three eps, followed by an order of 10 more. So really, it’s kind of like the show’s been renewed for another year.

A silver lining, I suppose. Waiting to see the Darlings for a few more months is better than never seeing the Darlings again at all…I guess we’ll have to keep guessing where Carmelita went.

Repeat: Our Golden Globes picks

January
13

The Golden Globes Press Conference airs tonight on NBC. Sure, it’s hardly the same drama and pageantry as it usually is with the champagne dinner, but there’s still a whole lotta hardware handed out.

So I snagged the Remote Accessories’ Golden Globes picks from a previous post and reworked it to make it easy for you to see our picks and our predictions for each of the television categories. Come back later to see how right (or wrong) we were.

Will 30 Rock and Damages walk away with armfuls of trophies? Stay tuned.

‘Daisies,’ ‘Damages’ get lotsa love from the Foreign Press

December
13

Released this morning, the Golden Globe television nominations (by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association) had lots of love for critical (and ratings) darling Pushing Daisies, as well as lots of cable fare, particularly Damages.

Here’s a look at the (television only) nominees, with my picks noted (as well as what I think will actually win):

Big Love (my pick — this season was outstanding!)
Damages
Grey’s Anatomy
House
Mad Men (what I think will win)
The Tudors

Best TV comedy or musical:
30 Rock (my pick)

The season by the numbers

December
10

I loved this “by the numbers” item on one of the TVGuide.com blogs. Fascinating stuff, at least to me, a total sucker for lists.

Highlights follow, but check out the full post here.

$63,000 — This is the median income for homes that watched ABC’s Big Shots, Dirty Sexy Money and Private Practice. Only NBC’s The Office ($73,000) and its lead-out Scrubs ($68,000) are higher. …
24.1 percent — This is the “lift” in viewership for NBC’s The Office when you include the people who play back the show on their DVRs the same week. It’s the highest percentage, followed by Heroes (22 percent), Reaper (18.7 percent) Grey’s Anatomy (18 percent), House (17.6 percent) and Friday Night Lights (17.1 percent).
45.2 — The median age for NBC’s prime-time audience, down almost two years from last season, making it the youngest of the four major networks. CBS is still the oldest, with half of its viewers aged 52.6 or older. But ABC, thanks to Dancing with the Stars, has seen its audience age the most, going from last season’s 47.4 to 49.

A very Darling Christmas

December
6

Ah, Christmas.

It’s the time of year when fathers prostitute their daughters, ministers leave the church and transgender mistresses go missing.

What? That doesn’t happen at your house for the holidays?

Well, we are dealing with the Darlings on “Dirty Sexy Money,” after all.

111523_6541_pre.jpg

Last night’s episode was a whirlwind of Darling offspring, from Karen and Tripp’s alliance against Simon to Brian’s crisis of faith.

Let’s break it down Darling by Darling, shall we?

Watershed moment for ‘Dirty Sexy Money’

November
29

Last night’s episode of “Dirty Sexy Money” was a benchmark for the series, and not just because the identity of Nick’s half-sibling finally came out.

111402_6641_pre.jpg

“The Watch” marked the moment when “DSM” switched off the soap suds and showed that it could be a pure, honest, excellent drama—instead of a melodrama.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the show’s campy fun: Jeremy’s job was to lighten last night’s heavy load, as he enlisted Lisa’s help in his quest to keep Sofia by making her think he’s a poor, struggling artist. Best line of the night was his at Lisa’s art gallery: “Let’s nude it up!”

(SPOILER ALERT AHEAD!)

ABC thinks ‘Dirty Sexy’ is money

November
21

ABC gave “Dirty Sexy Money” an early Christmas present: The network announced earlier this week that it was picking up the soap opera for a full season.

Yay! Right?

Well, yes and no.

111263_0001_pre.jpg

It’s great that ABC gave a thumbs up to this super-sudsy extravaganza; it’s a big deal, too, because “DSM” is the first show to be given that kind of approval since the writers’ strike began.

But that pesky writers’ strike is also the reason why we may not actually see much more of the Darlings this season.

Right now, it looks like maybe 13 episodes out of 22 will be finished before production shuts down. (That means only four or five more new ones will air after this week’s.)

Talks between the Writers Guild and media companies are set to resume on Nov. 26, right after Thanksgiving, so fingers crossed that the two sides will be able to come to a compromise.

It’s a long shot, but if a settlement can be reached, sounds like our regularly scheduled programming could be back on track by January.

But in the meantime, enjoy tonight’s special Thanksgiving installment, where Nick’s family joins the Darlings at their country home for the holiday.

From this photo alone, it looks like a hoot: Those outfits make me guess that a hunting expedition goes awry!

111262_3312_pre.jpg

And here’s some scoop about the upcoming weeks: Karen gets a new man, and nope, it’s not Nick.

Wedding bliss on ‘Dirty Sexy’

November
15

Seriously, did you REALLY think Karen was going to get hitched?

OK, technically, she did get married. But boy, asking Freddy for an annulment in the middle of her wedding reception? That takes major cojones.

111151_7146_pre.jpg

Then again, Karen knows when a marriage isn’t going to work out. In her words, she’s a pro! Perhaps the fifth time will be the charm? By then, the rights to her wedding photos should have depreciated down to $100.

Oh well. Another week, another wedding.

‘Eli Stone’ and the strike

November
13

Not all scripted TV will go kaput in the new year because of that darn writers’ strike. Some mid-season shows, like ABC’s “Eli Stone,” will likely air without a hitch.

111119_d_0669_pre.jpg Johnny Lee Miller is “Eli Stone”

The quirky legal drama—co-created by our favorite writer-producer, Rye’s Greg Berlanti (“Brothers & Sisters,” “Dirty Sexy Money”)—was always supposed to launch in 2008.

And because the cast and crew were busy bees and worked ahead, they’ve got 13 episodes completed.

People get to choose

November
12

So, the People’s Choice awards approach. This is where you, the people, get to choose the best shows. So long as they’re in the list of shows that the People’s Choice people decide you get to choose from.

Anyway, here are the TV nominations:

Favorite sci-fi show: Battlestar Galactica, Dr. Who, Stargate Atlantis (my choice: BSG)

Favorite new TV comedy: Aliens in America, Back to You, The Big Bang Theory, Carpoolers, Cavemen, Chuck, Reaper, Samatha Who? (my choice: Reaper)

Favorite TV comedy: The King of Queens, My Name is Earl, Two and a Half Men (my choice: this is a choice?)

Favorite animated comedy: Family Guy, King of the Hill, The Simpsons (my choice: The Simpsons)

Breaking strike news: ‘Pushing Daisies,’ ‘Men in Trees’ have early season finales prepared

November
12

We already learned that Heroes redid the end of its final episode before the December break to function as a season finale, should the writer’s strike necessitate that.

Well, it’s just been reported on TVGuide.com that Pushing Daisies and Men in Trees have episodes that can function as season finales should they have to.

110905_8539_pre.jpg

Daisies redid the ninth episode, and creator Bryan Fuller explained, “we added several elements that will put many balls into the air and hopefully encourage the audience to come back and see how they land.”

The ninth was the last script they had in hand as the strike became a done deal and it has just gone into production. That means, Fuller said, the crew should be able to work through Thanksgiving. But then that’s that.

For Trees, showrunner Jenny Bicks told TVGuide that she prepared an alternate ending to the final script she had in hand for just this eventuality.

Trees fans got jerked around so much last season, with several episodes never being aired, but that works to our advantage this time around. Those episodes were merged into this season, and the show will have 19 total episodes before it has to shut down.

‘Alias’ beauty to get ‘Dirty Sexy’

November
8

You might not know the name Gina Torres, but check out her photo below: You’ve seen her before, right?

standoff-promo005.jpg

The gorgeous wife of Laurence Fishburne—who, last I heard, owns a house with the Mr. in New Rochelle—has played an unstable ex-wife on “The Shield,” a nutty former g-friend of Wayne Palmer on “24,” a kick-ass baddie on “Alias”  and starred in both “Matrix” sequels with her hubby.

Now, TV Guide’s Michael Ausiello says she’s set to join of one of my favorite shows this season, “Dirty Sexy Money.”

She won’t play a long-long Darling, but the ex-wife of Darling nemesis, Simon Elder (Blair Underwood).

110525_d_128_pre.jpg

Torres was supposed to be featured in multiple episodes. Unfortunately, Ausiello says that Torres won’t be smoking up the screen for more than one episode right now, because of—you guessed it—the writers strike.

Speaking of, writer-producer extraordinaire Greg Berlanti walked the picket line in L.A. with some stars from his other hit ABC show, “Brothers & Sisters.” (Including Suffern-born cutie Dave Annable, who I interviewed recently!)

Sad Wednesday night lineup

November
7

Usually I wake up on Wednesdays happy as a Nantucket clam: All because three of my favorite shows air on this wonderful mid-week night, one fabulous series after the other.

But alas, I’m boo-hooing into my tea this morning because two-thirds of my evening will be ruined—all because of the darned CMA awards.

Mind you, I don’t hate country music. To paraphrase a line from “Sex & the City,” I’m just not that into it. The most I know about the genre is that Nicole Kidman is married to Keith Urban. And that Carrie Underpants, or whatever that “Idol” winner’s name is, will probably win a bunch of trophies.

But I’m putting voodoo hexes on country music at the moment because tonight’s awards show airs on ABC—thereby pre-empting “Pushing Daisies” and “Dirty Sexy Money.” (Don’t worry, they’re back next week.)

48773.jpeg

The horror! The only thing keeping complete TV withdrawal at bay is the CW’s “Gossip Girl.” (Which was a repeat last week: Ironic, no?)

Now, I’m glad that “GG” is on—but oddly, it’s not making me happy. It only makes me pine for my regular Wednesday night lineup even more.

King David, the soap opera

November
5

I kind of imagine that’s how the pitch for this pilot went:567682_91590769-2-2.jpg

“Picture the Bible crossed with All My Children or Dirty Sexy Money.”

“That sounds great!”

NBC ordered a pilot at the last minute, giving the OK for “Kings,” which The Hollywood Reporter described  “a contemporary soap loosely based on the story of King David, the Biblical king of Israel.”

The one-hour pilot was written by Michael Green, one of the co-executive producers on Heroes. Francis Lawrence (lost of music videos, plus Constantine and I Am Legend) will direct.

‘Dirty Sexy’ is an official guilty pleasure

November
1

Earlier this week, the Daily News reported that “Dirty Sexy Money” was tops with viewers of AOL Television: The soap opera won almost half the vote in a poll of what show is the “biggest guilty pleasure.”

111038_266_pre.jpg

It also topped this category: “Which new show are you getting hooked on?” (It just edged out one of my own personal favorites, “Pushing Daisies.”)

I just have to say, “Yay!”

“DSM” is TOTALLY one of my guilty pleasures, one that’s actually so much fun that there shouldn’t really be a lot of guilt associated with it.

Last night’s episode did what it does best, deliver the laughs along with the drama. A $20 million poker game, a standoff between Tripp and Patrick over his lover and one big snag (with a cute heinie) in Karen’s wedding plans.

TV super-producer Berlanti to direct ‘Green Lantern’ flick

October
30

Boy, that Greg Berlanti is on a roll!

hal-gl2.png

The Rye native and TV wunderkind has THREE projects on ABC this season: “Brothers & Sisters,” “Dirty Sexy Money” and mid-season’s “Eli Stone.”

When I talked to Greg earlier this fall, he’d hinted that he was a wee bit worn out from the grind of TV work –- and who could blame him?!? So he said he eventually wanted to get back to directing feature films. (He headed a well-received indie movie, “The Broken Hearts Club,” a few years back.)108703_0069_pre.jpg

Well, looks like he’s on track to making that dream happen. Buzz around Hollywood is that Greg will co-write and direct a live-action adaptation of the “Green Lantern” comic for Warner Bros.

The pitch that won Greg the gig? His version of the superhero will revolve around one of the Lantern’s alter egos, Hal Jordan, a test pilot who is given a ring by a dying alien that gives him entry to a interstellar police force. Of course, Greg isn’t silly enough to change the Lantern’s signature weakness: the color yellow.

Here’s what Greg told the Hollywood Reporter:

ABC thinks ‘Dirty Sexy’ is money

October
26

Word on the street is ABC wants “Dirty Sexy Money” to stick around for awhile longer: The network has ordered three more scripts of the super-sudsy soap opera.

110658_7719_pre.jpg

Sweet! That hopefully means we’ll get to see lots more over-the-top action like the twins’ dueling $1 million birthday parties from this week’s episode.

Next Wednesday’s installment alone looks action-packed. Here’s what to look for:

• A high-stakes poker game—with a $20 MILLION buy-in – between Simon Elder and Tripp.

• Karen’s wedding plans to Freddy hit some snags when she finds out she’s not divorced from her third husband (played by cutie Edie Cibrian).

• Juliet takes Brian Jr. under her wing.

• Patrick is blackmailed over his relationship with Carmelita (you knew it was only a matter of time!)

• Jeremy starts working as one of Tripp’s parking attendants and meets a mysterious lady (played by Sofia Vergara).

Get down and “Dirty,” people!

Life imitating art for ‘Dirty Sexy’ Samaire?

October
16

Is Samaire Armstrong—who plays the spoiled Paris-esque Juliet Darling on ABC’s new soap opera “Dirty Sexy Money”—identifying too much with her party girl character?

US Weekly is reporting that the former “O.C.” star is in rehab, dealing with unidentified “personal issues.” She’s in therapy on an outpatient basis, and a source tells US that Samaire is only expected to miss one episode of the show.

Thank goodness it’s not tomorrow night’s episode: The feuding twins, Jeremy and Juliet, are throwing themselves separate $1 million birthday bashes.

Jeremy’s is on the Brooklyn Bridge—appropriate, considering that the disheveled dope usually looks like he crawled out from under one. And Juliet’s party will have a French Revolution theme: Ooh la la!

Best wishes to Samaire to get better—and good luck to Blair Underwood, who’s bringing some more sexy to the show.

He finally joins the series as the mysterious billionaire Simon Elder, who Nick thinks may have killed his father.
