Chuck Bass switches sides on Gossip Girl

August
26

We all know Chuck Bass is a womanizer, womanizer, oh, a womanizer, baby.

(Giovanni Rufino / The CW)

But Entertainment Weekly was first to report that the Gossip Girl bad boy will be switching sides (temporarily) and kiss another man this season.

Michael Ausiello’s spies say that Chuck’s smoochy partner isn’t one of the show’s regular boy toys. It’s actor Neal Bledsoe, who’s guest starring as NYU’s head of freshman affairs. (Who knew there was such a thing?)

Blair’s involved in this sudden turn of events, naturally. Bledsoe’s gay character is in charge of picking a student to deliver an important speech and – surprise, surprise – Blair is willing to offer up her boyfriend to get the gig.

Oh, B. Will you ever learn?

American Idol’s latest guest judge: Neil Patrick Harris?!?

August
26

Hey, we’ll give props to Neil Patrick Harris until the cows come home: As his alter ego Barney Stinson might say, he’s legendary on CBS’s How I Met Your Mother.

(Eric McCandless/FOX)

But a guest judge on American Idol?!!

E!’s sources at FOX say that NPH was indeed on the judge’s panel yesterday at the Dallas auditions.

Sure, he’s been on Broadway before. But one stint in Cabaret doesn’t exactly make him a musical expert in my book.

Other guest judges for the upcoming season have been Grammy winners like Shania Twain and Mary J. Blige.

Does this mean AI is hitting the bottom of the barrel? No disrespect intended to NPH, of course…

Yonkers family wins ‘Great American Road Trip’

August
25

The DiSalvatore family of Yonkers – Silvio, Amy and their teenage sons Mason and Blake – took home the grand prize in last night’s finale of NBC’s “Great American Road Trip.”

(Seth Harrison/The Journal News )

They bested six other families who participated in the contest, tackling challenges at each stop along their Route 66 trip from Chicago to Los Angeles. For the last task – deciphering a photo puzzle with clues from locations that they’d previously visited – the DiSalvatores beat the Coote family of Lockport, Ill.

They took home a $100,000 grand prize, plus a year’s worth of free gas, tickets to Universal Studio and plane tickets to anywhere in the U.S.

Congratulations to the DiSalvatores!

‘Lost’ spoiler: Who’s Lennon?

August
19

“Lost” is just days away from starting production in Hawaii on the final season, which means that casting news is starting to trickle out of the jungle.

Entertainment Weekly’s Michael Ausiello got the scoop on a new recurring character named Lennon.

They want an actor in his mid-30s to late 50s, who can play this kind of guy:

<blockquote><div>Lennon: Scruffy, edgy, charismatic, and slightly stir-crazy, Lennon can be deferential when it’s called for. He’s the spokesperson/translator for the president of a foreign corporation. He’s a wily negotiator, and far more powerful than his lowly position would seem to indicate.</div></blockquote>

We all know that the producers never give out the characters’ real names in their casting calls, but is the name Lennon a clue?

And who does Lennon work for?

Sun’s dad, Mr. Paik, makes sense. This Lennon character might be one way the show explains how Paik Industries is tied to Widmore’s company and the Hanso Foundation (which funded the Dharma Inititative).

Post your theories about Lennon in the comments section below!

Then if you need a break from all that thinking, click through to check out some new ABC promos that feature a few of our favorite Losties…

Joe Jonas to help judge ‘American Idol’

August
19

Cover your ears, everyone!

Joe Jonas has just been added to the roster of guest judges on “American Idol.”

(AP Photo/Chris Pizzello)

According to multiple reports like this one, the middle Jonas brother is confirmed to appear at the Dallas auditions on Monday.

He’s among the growing list of celebs – which includes Victoria Beckham, Mary J. Blige and Shania Twain – who are helping fill the fourth judge’s seat while the show looks for a permanent replacement for Paula Abdul.

Let the screaming begin!

Vanessa’s mom cast on ‘Gossip Girl’

August
19

The “Gossip Girl” gurus have been searching for an actress to play the mother of renegade (and virtually useless) Vanessa.

Now they’ve found her: New Rochelle’s Gina Torres.

<a href=”http://view.picapp.com/default.aspx?term=gina torres&iid=4052502″ target=”_blank”><img src=”http://cdn.picapp.com/ftp/Images/1/d/e/5/PicImg_Essence_Luncheon_2009_150b.JPG?adImageId=2263470&imageId=4052502″ width=”234″ height=”351″  border=”0″ alt=”Essence Luncheon 2009″/></a><script type=”text/javascript” src=”http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.js”></script>

TVGuide.com reports that V’s mommy, named Gabriela Abrams, will be the warm and fuzzy type, unlike many of her friends’ parents.

Yet V lives in Brooklyn and is working at Rufus’ gallery to pay the rent, while Mom resides “off the grid” in Vermont.

Doesn’t exactly sound like quality parenting to me…but that’s what makes “GG” so much fun!

If Torres looks familiar, that’s because she’s had recurring roles on “24,” “Firefly”  and “Alias.” She also played Cas opposite hubby Laurence Fishburne – now the star of “CSI” – in the Matrix sequels.

The painted veil

August
18

Funny, how life comes full circle, isn’t it? In the “Inspector Morse” series, Sgt. Lewis was the long-suffering, everyday bloke to Inspector Morse’s exasperated — and exasperating — cultured intellectual.

Both Morse and the actor who played him, the superb John Thaw, are gone now. In “Inspector Lewis” — the smartly done sequel series airing at 9 p.m. Sundays on PBS’ “Masterpiece Mystery!” — Lewis (Kevin Whately) is the top dog. And his young sidekick, Sgt. Hathaway (Laurence Fox), has a cerebral, musical bent that Morse would’ve enjoyed nurturing. Or not. Read more of this entry »

Shania Twain to guest judge ‘American Idol,’ not Jessica Simpson

August
18

Another stop on the “American Idol” audition tour, another celebrity judge filling in for Paula Abdul.

People.com has confirmed that Shania Twain will be the next singing star to join Simon, Randy and Kara on the judges’ panel. She’ll help cover the Chicago round on Aug. 30-31.

<a href=”http://view.picapp.com/default.aspx?term=shania twain&iid=2603560″ target=”_blank”><img src=”http://cdn.picapp.com/ftp/Images/5/5/a/3/e4.JPG?adImageId=2253639&imageId=2603560″ width=”380″ height=”588″  border=”0″ alt=”42nd Annual CMA Awards – Arrivals”/></a><script type=”text/javascript” src=”http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.js”></script>

Twain follows Mary J. Blige, who helped out in Atlanta this week, and Victoria “Posh” Beckham, who pouted with the Boston wanna-bes earlier this month.

So who’s next? Katy Perry is on board at some point in the audition process, but meanwhile, the show’s producers are also searching for a permanent replacement for Paula. (That is, if they’re not secretly in talks to bring Paula back in time for Hollywood week, as some cynics suspect.)

The latest rumor had Jessica Simpson as a contender, with the New York Post’s Page Six claiming that her manager father, Joe, was pushing for the gig.

Simpson’s rep denied the story, and Joe Simpson himself sent out a tweet saying he was in Thailand, writing: “Do the lies ever stop????”

Well, if the story isn’t true – and Joe Simpson doesn’t exactly have a reputation for truth-telling – then Joe should get his tush back to the U.S.

Because given the sorry state of Jess’s career (and love life) at the moment, they should both be happy she’s being mentioned in the same breath as America’s No. 1 TV show…

‘Dancing with the Stars’ announces new cast

August
17

The new lineup for ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” includes the usual suspects:

A former Olympian (Natalie Coughlin), one-time supermodel (Kathy Ireland), washed-up singers (Donny Osmond, Aaron Carter, Macy Gray), C-list actors (Melissa Joan Hart, Ashley Hamilton) and a presumably rhythm-challenged athlete (Michael Irvin).

And then there’s the one competitor that suggests that something is seriously wrong with our society:

Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay will be hot-footing it across the “DWTS” stage this season.

I’m not quite sure I’m ready to see someone who once made major government decisions – even if he did resign amidst a campaign finance scandal – in cha-cha heels and tight trousers, are you?

As for the rest of the cast, there’s 16 contestants in all: Click here to view the entire list.

Whose rhumba are YOU most excited to see?

Fashion designers guest on ‘Gossip Girl’

August
17

Since “Gossip Girl” is one of the most stylin’ shows on the tube – and its stars routinely make red carpet best dressed lists  – it makes sense that the fashion world would be clamoring for cameos.

<a href=”http://view.picapp.com/default.aspx?term=tory burch&iid=4851719″ target=”_blank”><img src=”http://cdn.picapp.com/ftp/Images/3/3/5/a/Celebrities_arrive_to_ee34.jpg?adImageId=2241924&imageId=4851719″ width=”234″ height=”322″  border=”0″ alt=”Celebrities arrive to the American Ballet Theatre Spring Gala dinner in NYC”/></a><script type=”text/javascript” src=”http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.js”></script><a href=”http://view.picapp.com/default.aspx?term=georgina chapman&iid=5599786″ target=”_blank”><img src=”http://cdn.picapp.com/ftp/Images/9/e/f/5/11th_Annual_DesignCare_bc4f.JPG?adImageId=2241946&imageId=5599786″ width=”234″ height=”351″  border=”0″ alt=”11th Annual DesignCare Benefit for the HollyRod Foundation”/></a><script type=”text/javascript” src=”http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.js”></script>

So the Women’s Wear Daily report that fashion designers Tory Burch (top) and Marchesa’s Georgina Chapman will be making an appearance on the Oct. 5 episode of “GG” isn’t a huge surprise.

The two designers are the latest in a list of guest stars for the upcoming season, which kicks off on Sept. 14. Dreamy polo star Nacho Figueras has reportedly shot his scenes already, and it was recently announced that rockers Sonic Youth will drop by the show, too.

Getting excited about the new episodes, boys and girls? Until then, XOXO…

Mary J. Blige to guest judge ‘American Idol’

August
17

R&B goddess Mary J. Blige is the latest star to sign up for a guest judging gig on “American Idol.”

(AP Photo/Mark J. Terrill)

The Yonkers-born, Grammy winning superstar will be in Atlanta today to help out with the next round of auditions, following up on Victoria “Posh” Beckham’s stint in Boston.

The two ladies are stepping in for Paula Abdul, who announced last month that she won’t be returning to the show. They’ll be right next to returning judges Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and New Rochelle’s Kara DioGuardi.

Katy Perry will be another one of the show’s upcoming fill-ins, but who else will be popping into Paula’s seat?

No word just yet. But who would YOU like to see judging future “Idol” talent – and the talentless? Cast your vote in the comments section below….

‘Lost:’ Should Mr. Eko come back for the final season?

August
14

Lost-philes have been buzzing all summer about the dead (or possibly dead) island castaways we’ll see returning in some form to the island next season.

Daniel, Juliet, Charlie, Claire, Boone and Shannon are either confirmed or all but confirmed for a comeback.

But what about Mr. Eko?

While making the rounds to promote “G.I. Joe,” actor Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje has also been pretty vocal about wanting to make another appearance on “Lost.”

He asked to be written off the show in Season 3, which didn’t exactly make the producers happy.

The doors might have opened for him again, though, since lots of his former co-stars appear to now be headed back. He gives hope to Eko fans wanting to see more, telling Entertainment Weekly:

<blockquote><div>We have had talks about some things they might do for the final season and there are other dead folks coming back allegedly but at the moment it is still a maybe. A strong maybe but I have not shot anything yet or signed any contracts. But I’m hoping.</div></blockquote>

So what do you think? Would you want to see more Eko?

In fact, which castaway are you MOST looking forward to seeing again?

OMG! Sonic Youth to appear on ‘Gossip Girl’

August
14

It’s not like I didn’t love “Gossip Girl” before, but I’m now officially IN LOVE with this show.

Entertainment Weekly reports that one of my favorite bands from the ’80s and early ’90s – SONIC YOUTH – will perform on the upcoming season’s fifth episode. (Whee! Kim Gordon is a rock goddess…)

<a href=”http://view.picapp.com/default.aspx?term=sonic youth&iid=4965888″ target=”_blank”><img src=”http://cdn.picapp.com/ftp/Images/7/e/8/a/The_Apple_Store_0078.jpg?adImageId=2214463&imageId=4965888″ width=”380″ height=”253″  border=”0″ alt=”The Apple Store Soho Presents – Live From Soho: Sonic Youth”/></a><script type=”text/javascript” src=”http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.js”></script>

Turns out that showrunner Stephanie Savage is a huge fan of the band – and vice versa. I can’t really picture Kim and Thurston Moore hanging out watching “GG” with their 15-year-old daughter, but I guess stars really are just like us!

Anyway, a match made in heaven was made. The band will take part in a “very special event” involving Rufus and Lily.

And what will they be singing? An acoustic version of “Starpower” from their 1986 album, “EVOL.” (I’m a bit more partial to 1990’s “Kool Thing,” but let’s not be picky!)

Never heard the song, and want a sneak peek? Go here to check out a (rather blurry) video of the band doing that very song when it first came out, 23 YEARS AGO!

‘Lost’ news: Did the bomb plan actually work?

August
11

I probably don’t need to repeat that if you don’t want a morsel of scoop on the final season of “Lost,” then STOP READING NOW.

But if you do, here’s the latest from the jungle rumor mill…

You know that wacky plan to reset time by detonating a nuclear bomb?

It may have actually WORKED.

Greg Grunberg, the “Heroes” star who played Oceanic 815’s pilot in the show’s first episode, recently told TV Guide that he’s been approached about returning to “Lost” next season.

He claims he doesn’t know anything more about the writers’ plans, but that if his “Heroes” bosses approves the time off, he’ll be headed back to the island.

Since the pilot was eaten by the smoke monster shortly after 815 crashed, Grunberg’s character would be yet another of the seemingly dead who are reportedly set to appear in the final episodes. (It’s been all but officially confirmed that at least Charlie, Shannon and Boone will be back, too. And dead or undead, Elizabeth Mitchell has verified that we’ll also be seeing Juliet.)

But doesn’t it seem suspicious that the showrunners would go through such pains to bring back a minor character like the pilot? Unless, of course, Oceanic 815 lands safely in Los Angeles in 2004, just like it was supposed to, which effectively erases the past five seasons.

Speaking of L.A., here’s another bit of unconfirmed gossip about this very theory.

Several fan sites out there are claiming that the title of the final season’s two-hour premiere has been revealed…

Simon staying on ‘American Idol’

August
11

“American Idol” may have lost Paula, but the show is wasting no time locking down its meanest, but arguably, most important judge: Simon Cowell.

Simon will continue with the singing competition for at least three more seasons, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

On an earnings call earlier today, the parent company of “AI” co-producer 19 Entertainment confirmed that Simon is in the process of finalizing a deal with FOX to stay with the series until 2012.

Unlike Paula Abdul and Ryan Seacrest, whose contracts expired at the end of last season, Simon had one more year to go on his.

He reportedly decided to renegotiate now for the upcoming season, as well as Seasons 10 and 11. Reports claim that he is expected to earn $45 million under the new pact, up from the $36 million a year that he currently makes.

As host, Seacrest is supposedly set to make $45 million, too, over the next three years. And as everyone in the free world now knows, Paula decided to leave the show last week when she and the show couldn’t agree on those dolla dolla bills. (It’s said she rejected a $5 million-a-year offer, and was seeking double that amount.)

FOX also decided to bring back Kara DioGuardi for next season. And the network brass recently announced that stars like Victoria Beckham and Katy Perry will rotate as guest judges during the upcoming season’s audition process, which is currently underway, until it finds a permanent replacement for Paula. They hope that will happen by the time the show returns to the air early next year.

But what about Randy Jackson? This circus may start all over again when the jovial judge’s contract expires next year.

It that okay with you, dawgs?

‘Gossip Girl’ Season 3 promos!

August
11

They’re baaaaack.

Well, almost.

It’s only a month until the gang from “Gossip Girl” returns for a third season on Sept. 14 (at a new time, 9 p.m.), and once again, the CW is rolling out a set of controversial promos.

<object width=”425″ height=”344″><param name=”movie” value=”http://www.youtube.com/v/nP1Fn-49Sz8&hl=en&fs=1&”></param><param name=”allowFullScreen” value=”true”></param><param name=”allowscriptaccess” value=”always”></param><embed src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/nP1Fn-49Sz8&hl=en&fs=1&” type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” allowscriptaccess=”always” allowfullscreen=”true” width=”425″ height=”344″></embed></object>

Much like last year’s “OMFG” campaign, this season’s tagline is “WTF.”

Hey, it’s not what you’re thinking, potty-mouths! In this world, “WTF” stands for “Watch This Fall.” Get it? Oh, you clever, clever CW advertising staff!

Anyway, the real scoop is in the featured scenes, and it seems that life as we know it has gone topsy-turvy for our Upper East Siders.

Apparently, Dan Humphrey is now cool, and Blair Waldorf a loser?!? Serena’s been hooking up with Carter? Dan’s hooking up with Georgina? Nate has a new girlfriend? Chuck may or may not be cheating on Blair?

WTF, indeed!

Check out the extended promo above – but click below to see my personal favorite scene so far…

<object width=”425″ height=”344″><param name=”movie” value=”http://www.youtube.com/v/ij-bD6KltzY&hl=en&fs=1&”></param><param name=”allowFullScreen” value=”true”></param><param name=”allowscriptaccess” value=”always”></param><embed src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/ij-bD6KltzY&hl=en&fs=1&” type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” allowscriptaccess=”always” allowfullscreen=”true” width=”425″ height=”344″></embed></object>

ABC’s ‘V’ to premiere in November

August
10

As a huge fan of the original cheese-tastic ’80s miniseries, I’ve been looking forward to ABC’s remake of “V,” starring Elizabeth Mitchell from “Lost.”

Over the weekend, the network finally announced the show’s premiere date: Tues., Nov. 3. That’s late for a season premiere, but earlier than expected, since the series had been trumpeted as a mid-season replacement. (Maybe it’s a quarter-season replacement?)

Anyway, as you can see from the official trailer, the original “V” premise remains the same.

Aliens come to Earth pledging peace and offering to share scientific and technologic advances. But this helpful facade is literally skin-deep; there’s something evil going on with these Visitors. A group of resistance fighters develop, including Mitchell’s FBI counter-terrorism agent, to out the V’ secrets.

I was lucky enough to catch an early peek at the pilot episode, and while I’m disappointed that none of the Visitors snacked on rats, the series looks incredibly promising. For one, the production value is super-slick (hey, the original was in 1983!) and the plot hasn’t deviated greatly from the source material.

For instance, we’ve still got a sexy-creepy female leader of the Visitors, traitor aliens working to help the humans, an ambitious TV anchor willing to overlook journalistic and moral ethics, and a potential boy-meets-Visitor love match.

It’s very cool to see all these winks at the first version, but I’m hoping that the reboot will take on a bit more life of its own as the season progresses.

And I can’t wait to see how the show will top this so-bad-it’s-fantastic alien birth scene from 1984’s “V: The Final Battle”…I dare you not to crack up!

Well-cooked

August

With “Julie & Julia” opening today, you might be interested in knowing that PBS is dishing out Julia Child’s shows on its video portal at http://www.pbs.org/video.

With all do respect to Meryl Streep, I can’t imagine a greater impersonation of Julia than Dan Aykroyd’s on the old “Saturday Night Live,” and that’s because he hit on her essence: The chicken might’ve fallen on the floor. The saucepan may have slipped off the counter. But Julia sautéed on.

The result was a life excellently – though not perfectly — lived, with some good eats in the bargain.
